Large, Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar with Pontil in Good Condtion. Looks Great with Flowers or Leaves. Large handblown antique storage or food jar of deep forest green, presenting a bold, hefty look because of its size and bulk. This jar is 10 inches high and has a diameter of about 4½ inches at the bottom.
Lots of quaint irregularities such as an interesting irregular neck. It has a shallow pontil on the bottom and good wear marks.
We have photographed it from a couple of angles so you can get a good idea of the conditon. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers. They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck. These date from the early 19th century, from about 1800 to 1830. They have great character and make spectacular vases.Thank you for looking at our item. _gsrx_vers_1251 GS 8.2.1 (1251).
